Laura Canfield Interiors is all about creating spaces that feel classic and timeless while still feeling fresh and relevant. I love mixing traditional elements with a few more modern touches to create a home that feels classic —not overly formal, trendy, or like everything came from the same place.

Understanding the Philosophy of Laura Canfield Interiors

At Laura Canfield Interiors, I believe your home should reflect the people who live in it. Of course, I want every space to be beautiful, but it also has to work for your everyday life. The best designs are the ones that feel personal, functional, and like they truly belong to you. These are a few of the things that guide my design process:

Embracing Individuality

Every homeowner has their own story, personality, and way of living, and I believe their home should reflect that. I love incorporating pieces and details that feel personal and meaningful, whether that comes from a favorite color, a collected piece, family heirloom, or simply the way a family lives in their space. The goal is to create a home that feels like you—not like everyone else’s.

Balancing Old and New

Mixing modern and traditional styles is about more than just combining different pieces of furniture. It’s about finding the right balance between classic elements and fresh, updated details. I like to mix materials, colors, and textures in a way that feels cohesive and layered—creating a space that feels timeless without feeling stuck in the past.

Prioritizing Functionality

Of course, I want every space to be beautiful, but it also has to work for the people living in it. I think good design considers how you actually use your home—from the way you move through a space to what you need to store and how your family lives day to day. The goal is to create a home that not only looks beautiful but makes everyday life a little easier, too.

Key Design Elements in Modern and Traditional Fusion

When mixing modern and traditional styles, there are a few key elements that help create that balance. Here are some of the things I consider when bringing the two together:

Color Palette

A cohesive color palette helps bring everything together, especially when mixing different styles. I tend to gravitate toward warm, neutral tones as a foundation and then layer in color, texture, and contrast to give a space personality.

Furniture Selection

Furniture is another big part of finding the right balance between modern and traditional styles. I love mixing pieces from different styles and time periods to create a space that feels layered and collected rather than like everything was purchased from the same showroom. A classic sofa might be paired with a more modern coffee table, for example, or traditional wood furniture can be mixed with cleaner, more updated pieces. The key is making sure everything works together while still giving the room some personality.

Textiles and Patterns

Textiles are one of my favorite ways to make a space feel warm and layered. Rugs, pillows, window treatments, and upholstery all add texture and help bring personality into a room. Mixing different fabrics and patterns—whether traditional or more modern—keeps a space from feeling flat and helps create that collected, comfortable look I love.

Lighting Fixtures

Lighting can completely change the feel of a space and is one of those details that can really help bring different styles together. I love mixing lighting that feels classic and timeless with pieces that have a slightly more modern edge. Whether it’s a statement chandelier, a simple pendant, or layered lamps and sconces, lighting adds personality and helps create the right mood in a room.

Practical Tips for Achieving the Modern-Traditional Look

Creating a home that mixes modern and traditional styles is really about finding the right balance and not being afraid to layer different elements together. Here are a few things I keep in mind when creating this look:

Start with What You Love

Instead of worrying too much about sticking to one specific style, start with the pieces or architectural details you really love. Whether it’s a beautiful fireplace, a family heirloom, or a piece of artwork, those things can help guide the rest of the design.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix Styles

Some of my favorite spaces combine old and new. A traditional piece of furniture can look beautiful paired with something cleaner and more modern. Mixing styles and different time periods is what helps a home feel collected and personal rather than like everything came from the same store.

Layer in Texture

Texture is what keeps a space from feeling flat. Mixing woods, fabrics, metals, rugs, and other natural materials adds warmth and depth and makes a room feel much more inviting.

Make It Personal

Your home should feel like your home. Family pieces, things collected over time, artwork, and other meaningful details are what give a space personality and make it feel lived in.

Pay Attention to Scale

Even the most beautiful furniture won't work if it isn't the right size for the room. Paying attention to scale and proportion helps everything feel balanced and ensures the space is both beautiful and functional.

At the end of the day, creating a home that blends modern and traditional design is all about balance. You don’t have to choose one style and stick to it. Mixing old and new, layering in pieces you love, and making thoughtful choices along the way can create a home that feels timeless, personal, and uniquely yours. The best spaces are the ones that look beautiful but also feel good to live in—and that’s always the goal.
